Final thoughts as AJET Chairman

[en]Chair SpeechIt’s hard to imagine it’s been a year since I became AJET Chair. The mix of emotions that comes with finishing my term are hard to describe. I’m so proud of my team and what we accomplished, but I wish we had a bit more time, so that we could to do more. It’s exciting that there’s new challenges to come in my own life, but sad that I have to end this chapter with AJET.

This year has brought things with it that I could never have imagined. Good and bad. I look back on the year and I’m so happy to have witnessed the unprecedented support we got from 1st year JETs signing up for the AJET e:Connect, but at the same time, who would have thought that we’d have typhoons destroying areas of Japan right after the Tohoku disasters and we would need support to JETs and to rebuild a second time in so many months?

During my time as chair, I wanted to engage all JETs, current and past, as well as the ministries and communities around us. I wanted to inspire everyone to greater success and triumphs that we could all enjoy.

I challenged you all, in my election campaign, to make this the year that “We can do more, we can help more, we can be more!”[/en]
[ja]Chair Speech私が、AJETの会長となり、早一年が経とうとしているとは想像し難い事実です。間もなく任期を終えようとしている私の、複雑な感情を表現することは本当に難しいものです。私は、これまで私が任期中に行ってきたこと、そして私たちが成し遂げたことを本当に誇りに思っています。同時に、あと少しだけがあれば、もっとたくさんのことが達成できたと思っています。これからの私の人生、また新たな挑戦が待ち受けているということを楽しみに思っていますが、このAJETの章を終えなければいけないということは悲しい現実です。

今年は、これまで私が想像すらしていなかった様々ことが起こりました。
良いことも悪いことも。そして一年を振り返ってみると、一年目のJETたちが、AJETのe-Connectに申し込み、これまでに前例のなかったサポートが得ることができて本当に嬉しかったです。しかし、同時に、東日本大震災の直後、台風が日本を襲い、再びJETたちが、何ヶ月もの間、被災地の復興支援をするということを誰が想像していたでしょう。

会長としての任期間中、私は現役と過去、全てのJETメンバー、そして各省と私たちの周りのコミュニティーも含め、関わりを持とうとしてきました。私は、皆を鼓舞させたく、皆が共感できる大成功と勝利のために努力して参りました。

私は選挙運動の中で、今年が、
”We can do more, we can help more, we can be more!
（もっと出来る、もっと助けられる、もっとなれる！）”年となるように皆さんに呼びかけてきました。[/ja]

JETs and Diplomats Dinner in Umeda, Osaka.

[en]In addition to engaging government officials in discussions related to English education, a lot of the work we do in Osaka is aimed at providing JETs with opportunities to meet and exchange ideas. This week, our friends at the US Consulate Osaka/Kobe, graciously invited all the JETs in the Kansai area to an exclusive dinner with members of the State Department and diplomats throughout Japan.

Among the members of the panel were JET alumni from each decade of the Programme’s existence. Richard Mei, Ben Brown, and Danette Sullivan represented the 1980’s, 1990’s, and 2000’s, respectively, while myself and AJET’s Director of PR Cailin Arena spoke on behalf of current JETs.

All of them were there to speak about their experiences working for the US State Department, and also to give advice to those considering applying. Considering the state department and JET have very similar values in terms of internationalization and promoting foreign interests abroad, we were extremely pleased with the chance to collaborate on an event! Questions from the audience ranged from specific advice about life working for the State Department, to questions about how to study for the Foreign Service Exam.

This dinner, that was arranged in conjunction between AJET and the US Consulate, is part of a new events series myself and others are working on. This night was just one of the many opportunities in store for JETs and JET alumni in the Kansai area. Other highlights from this Spring include the Stonewall AJET dinner at the US Consulate General’s home in Kobe, and the Yamamoto Theater Osaka JET collaboration performances.

名簿の中には、それぞれの時代のJETプログラムの同窓生が含まれていました。私自身と、AJETの広報担当のケイリン・アリーナが、現在のJETの代表として出席する中、リチャード・メイ、ベン・ブラウン、そしてダネット・サリバンが、1980年代、1990年代、そして2000年代をそれぞれ代表して出席していました。

出席者は皆、アメリカ国務省で働いた経験を語り、これから、志願するものへのアドバイスもおくられていました。国務省とJETは、国際化に対してとても類以した価値観をもち、海外への興味の促進を行っていることから、このイベントで、コラボレートする機会があったことは、大変喜ばしいことでした。聴衆からの質問には、国務省で働く生活についての具体的なアドバイスから、外交官試験のための勉強法についての質問まで挙りました。

AJETとアメリカ領事との間を取り持つために行われたこの夕食会は、私自身と他のメンバーが行っていることの新たなイベントの一つになりました。この夜は、関西にいるJETとJETの同窓生にとっての、沢山の機会の一つとして蓄えられました。アメリカ総領事の神戸のご自宅で行われた石壁AJET夕食会や、大阪JETと山本能楽堂とのコラボレーションを含め、この春の新たなハイライトとなりました。

Special Message to all JETs

As foreigners, whether you live in rural Japan or in its busiest cities, we are still by far a small minority. The Japanese government ministries set out, decades ago, to find a way to expose more of its citizens to foreign culture and different ways of thinking. What developed after years of planning and experimenting was the JET Programme.

In my humble opinion, I believe the JET Programme has been the greatest investment of government time, money, and effort towards internationalization on many levels. The ministries and countless other governments and organizations have worked together for over 25 years to give us the opportunity we are now experiencing to influence the future of our communities. Not just the communities we live and work in now, but also our future communities that we can influence based on our experience here and now.
I believe that this puts a great amount of responsibility in our laps. It would be easy to view your time as a JET as an extended vacation, or as a chance to go sight- seeing and have fun with very little stress or effort, because we’re not “required” to go the extra mile in our workplaces. However, if we take that route, we not only rob our communities of all they could gain from our knowledge, we rob ourselves of the fulfillment that comes with helping our communities become better.

That said, do you remember what we were told our goals are as JETs in this Programme when we arrived in Tokyo for orientation?

  • Share our culture.
  • Advise schools on Foreign language education curriculum/methods.
  • Act as an assistant in classes.

[ja]外国人である私たちは、日本の田舎に住んでいても、大都市に住んでいても、はるかに少数派のグループです。日本政府の各省は、何十年も前に、国民の異文化へのさらなる関わり方と新たなものの考え方に乗り出しました。何年もの計画と実験を経て、発展に至ったものが、ＪＥＴプログラムでした。

私見によれば、ＪＥＴプログラムは、すばらしい国家資産と年月、そして、あらゆる水準において国際化に費やした、日本政府のこの上ない投資であると確信しています。各省とその他の行政と団体は、25年以上もの間、私たちのコミュニティーの将来のため、今まさに経験を積んでいるこの機会を与えるために協力してきました。それは、私たちが暮らし、働いている今のコミュニティーだけではなく、今ここでの経験をもとに、影響を与えていけるこれから私たちが関わっていくコミュニティーも含まれているのです。
これは、私たちに多大な責任が任されていると認識しています。この時間をどう使うかは私たちの責任によるのです。ＪＥＴの時間を休暇の延長や、労力やストレスの少ない、観光をして楽しむ絶好のチャンスとして見ることはとても簡単だと思います。なぜなら、職場の以外での余分な活動は、私たちの「義務」ではないからです。しかし、もし私たちが別の道をいくことができれば、地域が私たちの知識の全てを、得られる限り奪うのではなく、私たちも、地域が良くなっていくということに役だっているという充実感も得られるのです。

というのも、私たちがオリエンテーションのために東京に降り立ち、このプログラムのＪＥＴとしての目的を聞かされたか覚えているでしょうか。

＞外国語教育のカリキュラムとメソッドに対し、学校へアドバイスをする。

Stonewall AJET Event in Kobe

[en]Since meeting the US Osaka-Kobe Consulate General, Patrick Linehan last year, we have had so many more opportunities to host events for JETs. Part of what AJET seeks to do for JETs is provide them with general resources useful to everyone, but we also cater to those with special interests.

Patrick is in a great position to help us do this in that he is an openly gay diplomat who is married and living with his husband, Emerson, at their residence in Kansai. Because of Patrick’s openness about his personal life, he has been able to, in my opinion, be a great role model to other expats here. Patrick demonstrates that you can hold a position of high visibility and share your culture and perspective, all while being honest and open to others about who you are.

Patrick graciously offered to host an event at his home, inviting members of Stonewall, the LGBT Special Interest Group for AJET, to an exclusive dinner at his home in Kobe. Patrick’s husband is from Brazil, and their cook is also from Brazil. At the beginning of this event we had drinks and then were treated to the traditional Brazilian dish, feijoada! Afterward, Patrick spoke to us for a while about his husband, how he perceived LGBT challenges in Japan, and about their experience living in Japan openly and honestly

Everyone had a chance to introduce themselves. There were JETs from far and wide. I was really moved by the fact that some JETs had travelled from as far as Tohoku and also from southern islands to come to this event!

This further solidified for me that these JETs are ready to be engaged and involved, provided they have the opportunities available. Sometimes it’s just a matter of giving people the right environment to collaborate openly and honestly. We can’t thank Patrick and Emerson enough for extending their example to AJET’s LGBT members who want to make the most of their time on JET!

[ja]昨年、在大阪・神戸アメリカ総領事館のパトリック・リネハン総領事にお会いしてから、関西で、JETと我々のコミュニティーに本当に沢山の機会を提供することができています。AJETがJETのために提供するものの一つは、皆に役立つ一般的な情報を提供することですが、特別な興味をもったものにも情報を提供することも大切です。

パトリックは、公にゲイの外交官であり、関西でご主人のエマーソンと暮らしていることを公表していることから、国際化にユニークな様相をもらたしました。
パトリックが、彼の私生活を公にしていることから、私の意見ではありますが、その他のゲイコミュニティーにとって素晴らしいロールモデルになることが出来ると思います。パトリックは、正直に本当の自分をさらけ出しながら文化と視点をシェアし、周りから関心されながらも、重要な役割を務められることを証明いたしました。

パトリックは、彼の自宅で快くイベントを行うことを提案され、”Stonewall”のメンバーとAJETのLGBTの特別なグループを、神戸にある彼の自宅での特別な夕食会に招待されました。我々のコミュニティーの中のLGBT JETのためにイベントを提供でき、全国中に宣伝できる機会に繋げていけることは、もちろん素晴らしい機会であると思っていました。

パトリックのご主人はブラジル出身で、彼らのシェフもブラジルの方です。このイベントの始めには、飲み物と、ブラジルの伝統的な料理のフェジョアーダを頂きました！その後、パトリックは、我々に彼のご主人について語って下さり、日本でのLGBTに対する理解や、日本で堂々と正直に暮らしている生活についてなどを語って下さりました。

そして、全員自己紹介の機会もありました。多方面からゲイとストレートのJETが出席しました。このイベントのために東北から南の島々まで、様々なところからやってきたJETたちがいたことに本当に感動いたしました！

私は、それらのJETたちが積極的に関わる気持ちでいることと、彼らに沢山の機会があることを与えられたことから、私にとって我々のさらなる団結につながりました。

時には堂々と誠実に協力するために正しい環境を皆に与えることが必要なのです。パトリックとエマーソンには、AJETのLGBTにとって、彼らがJETでの時間を充実させるための大きな例になっていただいたことは、感謝してもしきれません。

Minister of Foreign Affair’s Tohoku Memorial Reception at the Iikura House, Tokyo

[en]Today I had the great honor of attending the special memorial reception of Koichiro Genba, the Minister of Foreign Affairs in Tokyo.  I was invited as a representative of the JET Programme and as someone who had helped in the Tohoku relief and aid Efforts this past year.  I was accompanied to the event by fellow JETs Jon Leflore and Carl Farlow, who also played a significant part in relief efforts after the disasters.

The event was held at the Iikura House in Roppongi and was a spectacular event.  In attendance were high level officials and diplomats ranging from Japanese Cabinet members and secretaries of state from countries all around the world.

While it was somber event in remembrance of the lives that were lost, it was also uplifting to hear great stories of success in the aftermath, stories of people helping people from various backgrounds, and stories of how far reconstruction has come.

We were entertained by speeches from the band “Monkey Majik” and moved by the amazing sounds of the Fukushima Prefecture Asaka Reimei High School Choir, a repeat winner of the Best Choir of Japan Award year after year.  Their songs were emotionally touching and something I will not soon forget.

I even had the pleasure of meeting the Minister of Foreign Affairs, himself, and having a short conversation with him.  I was surprised by how easy-going he was and comfortable to speak with!  He even told me that he had once worked in Daito city, Osaka, where I am currently living.

On behalf of JETs, I thanked him for the Ministry’s continued support of the Programme and told him how much it has meant to us all.  I explained how large the readership of Connect magazine had become and asked if he would consider writing to the JETs and the incoming JETs, because I thought it would be great if we could all hear his thoughts on the Programme.  He said that he would, and I was humbly thanked him for his time and consideration, knowing what a great honor this would be.

I can’t thank the Ministry of Foreign Affairs enough for inviting me, and hope that everyone else will use this anniversary as a reminder of how far we’ve come, as well as a reminder of how much we can do together. [/en]
[ja]今日は、大変名誉なことに、外務省の玄蕃大臣により、JETプログラムの代表としてご招待いただいた私は、この一年、東北支援と救援に協力をしたものに対しての特別なメモリアルレセプションに出席いたしました。私は、また、東北の大震災の後、素晴らしい支援活動に励んだJETの仲間であるジョン・リフロアーと、カール・ファーロウを同伴いたししました。

このイベントは、六本木の飯倉別館で開催され、たいへん壮大なイベントでした。出席者は、日本の閣僚や、世界中から来られた国務大臣秘書官の方々にいたるまで、政府の高官や外交官などでした。

亡くなった方々を追悼する厳粛なイベントでありましたが、余波の中で起きた、素晴らしい成功のお話、様々な背景をもつ人々が、互いに助け合ったお話、そして、復興の状況についてなどのお話を聞くことで勇気づけられることもありました。

バンドの「Monkey Majik」のスピーチや、毎年のように日本の合唱コンクールで優勝している福島県の安積黎明(あさかれいめい)高校の合唱団の素晴らしい歌声などに歓迎されました。彼らの歌声は、心に残り、忘れ難いものとなりました。

喜ばしいことに、私は、外務大臣ご本人ともお話することができました。そして、大臣の気さくさと、話しやすさに驚かされました。さらに、大臣は、現在私が勤務する、大阪の大東市でご勤務されていたこともあると言われていました。

私は、JETを代表し、省庁のプログラムへの変わらぬご支援と、それが我々にとっていかに意味があるものかをお伝えし、皆様に感謝を申し上げました。私は、Connectマガジンの読者がどれほど拡大しているかご説明し、JETとこれからやってくるJETメンバーのために記事の執筆をお願い出来ないかと尋ねました。それは、プログラムにとって、メンバーが、大臣のご意見をお聞きすることが出来れば、たいへん素晴らしいと思ったからです。大臣は、ご検討していただけると言って下さり、私は、これが、いかに名誉なことであるかを理解した上で、深くお礼を申し上げました。

私は、外務省からこのイベントにお招き頂いたことを、感謝をしてもしきれません。そして、皆さんが、この一年間を、共に協力し、どれだけがんばってきたかを思い出すよいきっかけになったことと願っています。[/ja]
